Treating PCB Board the nanotech way

Printed Circuit Boards can be pulverised to nanoparticles to bring back metals, polymers and oxides, states new study.

Printed Circuit Boards are best recycled by pulverising them into nanosized particles to effectively bring back worthwhile elements for example, polymers, oxides and metals, claim Indian researchers.

The cutting edge method, described in a scientific study published in Materials Today in March, is scalable and ecosystem-friendly, said researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and the Rice University in Houston, US.

In the research study, the researchers followed the basic principle that ultra-low temps make materials crisp and are simple to pulverise and separate.

They placed a Printed Circuit Board in a rotating cylinder with temps brought down to – 119 degrees Celsius before crashing it with steel balls to break it into nanoparticles which were then dispersed in water.

The nanoparticles could be put to varied uses, the researchers said. They could be added to polymer composites reinforcing them, utilized in 3D printing or in the manufacturing of polymer powder-based paints.

Metallic nanoparticles could be reprocessed after purification by familiar ways.

“With some initial sorting, the method is able to handle virtually all Printed Circuit Boards, says Kamanio Chattopadhyay, research guide, professor at IISc and an author of the study.

Although the technology is still in the lab period, the research team is currently working with an industry to show its scalability and performance.

The machine is placing components on FR4 material PCB that is 23″ (584.2 mm) length by 3.675″ (93.34 mm) width and .062″ (1.57 mm) thickness. This machine will assemble even larger PCB’s in both length and width and handle nearly any component. From 0201 to the largest bumped array, fine pitch and a variety of odd-from parts.

Simple and typical, passive and active components were used to demonstrate basic machine operations only. No effort was made in terms of programming to place components on a specific target, only in general area. However, the SOIC16 parts were programmed for body length plus .0005″ (.0127 mm). In the video they appear to be touching, and they are. This is do to component body variation.

This machine has two 4 spindle High flexibility placement heads and two automated nozzle changers. Only one head is used as speed and optimization were not a consideration for this video. The focus was on general operations. Where considerably higher levels of productivity are required we simply bolt on the 7 Spindle high speed heads with “vision on the fly” capability for around 10,000 CPH.

When dispensing is needed we simply remove one of the heads and replace it with a high speed 4 spindle dispensing head, or run a combination of both enabling paste, adhesive and component placement, and or part-adhesive-part, that is a part on top of a part with dispensed product in between with solder paste at the bottom. All on a single machine.

You may notice the monitor displaying vision inspection results. You may also notice the machine placement heads make a unusual move to the far side of the machine. This was to place a component on the reject collection conveyor as it failed the programmed vision inspection requirements. At the end of the placement/assembly process another unusual movement can be seen. That is, the machine automatically replacing the missing part that failed inspection.

The system makes use of multiple cameras and a high speed vision system for a variety of tasks. including; inspect of components and their features, such as bodies, leads, bumps, PCB alignment, component to spindle alignment and part to pad, and more.
